What is a catalog?

Answer

A library catalog is a searchable collection of library materials in a variety of formats (books, articles, videos, etc.) found in a library. There are technical differences between the terms library "catalog" and "databases," but these and other terms are often used interchangeably.

  • For instance, some libraries may refer to the library catalog as "the library website", on-line catalog, or OPAC.
  • In other instances, the catalog may be referred to by the name of the database "discovery" system, brand, or publisher (such as "PRIMO")

To "look things up" is the operative terminology in a library environment whether in a catalog, database, website, etc.
